Paperwork.

 Paperwork is fundamental.

you send off paperwork and it gets rubbertamped and returned to you all before it reaches your perception. Different Bureau offices have different processes and you get different results based on your closest office in conceptual space.

Deja Vu is getting two copies back stapled together in duplicate. The pink copy and goldenrod copy stuck together so you experienced the thing twice.

paranormal experiences are when the thing and you are in physical reality together but it's an object or being that the Bureau rejects, mis-categorizes, or makes a mistake on. So your experience is confusing. Maybe you don't see the thing at all but you sense it.

Past life memories are when you get the wrong person's paperwork back by mistake. A metaphysical typo.

TIN EPISODE 26: TIME LOOP AWARENESS DAY

TRANSCRIPT FOR TIME LOOP AWARENESS DAY (Feb 2nd)

CRYSTAL: Incoming transmission from The Timescanner. Entertaining fellow time agents stationed in the field. Working in secret to maintain the integrity of ther spacetime continuum. Broadcasting to you from Time Crystal Omega at the heat death of the universe, here's your host The Timescanner. This is the Infinite Now.

TIMESCANNER: Welcome Time Agents. TOday's episode is a public service announcement. TOday is interdimensional Timeloop awareness day. TImeloops can happpen to anyone. Have compassion for friends dealing with recently emerging from timeloops. They may not be into the same stuff that you used to do together. Their values may have changed from thousands of years of repeating the same day over and over and over and over and over. Timeloop survivirs often report personal growth and a renewed passion for life once they return to their loopless timeline and they may not want to come over to your house and play Xbox with you anymore. They may not want to grab beers and bitch about work. Reallize taht what your friend went through was horrific and boring and horrifically boring. Evolving as a person was unintentional and was the only way that they could cope with their unfortunate circumstance. They didn't mean to evolve and leave you behind, They just did. Consider changing your routines and joining them on whatever new path they've chose. Proposing a new ecomnomic system to solve the world's problems or manufacturing new inventions that allow people to grow sustainable food in a machine the size of a brreadbox that sits on the counter. Ask them about their experience within the timeloop and what they devoted their time and brainpower to while there. Youmay be impressed at what they have to say. You may find that even your old poker buddy is capable of solving some of the world's problems when faced with an eternity to daydream and perform social experiments on people who won't remember when the loop starts over. Also, keep in mind that there may be elemenst of their duration in the timeloop that they don't want to talk about. limitless life means limitless mistakes made and it is likely that these mistakes are the reason that your friend accidentally grew as a human. Accept them for who they are now and don't let their past mistakes prevent you from making your own mistakes and learning from those just like they did. most importanly the timeloop survivor in your life needs you. they need your acceptance and support and they'll need re-aclimating to a world where there actions have consquences that last longer than 24 hours. consequences that quickly piral out of control and seldom result as intended. Youknow this well. That's why on you days off from the time bureau you sit at home and play xbox. work together with your timeloop survivor. Keep each other in check. Great things may result from the new friendship that the two of you will embark on from this day forward.

TIN EPISODE 24: ECSTATIC UNKNOWING

ECSTATIC UNKNOWING

Timescanner avoids answering a mailbag question by expounding the argument that knowing is overrated. In the process he tells us about the League of the Secret Knot, an ancient secret society created by early Time Agents.

TRANSCRIPT FOR ECSTATIC UNKNOWING

CRYSTAL: Incoming transmission from the Timescanner. Entertaining fellow time agents stationed in the field. WOrking in secret to maintain the integrity of the spacetime continuum. Broadcasting to you from time crystal omega at the heat death of the universe. Here's your host the Timescanner and this is The Infinite Now.

TIMESCANNER:
Oh hello there. Ooh. spacetime carrier pigeon. That means that it's time for another Infinite Now Mailbag. Ok. This letter says, "Dear Timescanner. What is the ultimate goal of the Causal War. War we on the right side? Did I do the right thing by joining the Time Bureau? I miss my family. Who are the men in robes I keep seeing in my peripheral vision? The disappear when I look directly at them. The first robed man appeared in the spaces where I can just quite ot see him on the day I enlisted in the Time Bureau and they've been multiplying ever since. The robed men are everywhere now. Everywhere except where I'm looking. They're even just outside of my dreams watching. Sincerely. Agent Redbreast Bowling Tango.
Dear Tango, I'm not going to answer that directly. Some answers can only be understood via detours. In the same way that you aren't able to perceive the men who aren't really there when you are looking directly at them. So let me start somewhere else entirely. Depending on who you ask there are between 10 and 26 dimensions to our universe. The human condition is a result of being able to conceive of higher dimensions but not being able to experience them directly. we're always striving for those parts of the universe that we can't quite reach. yet. Parts of our universe that we can just barely percieve. Our existence as physical eathbound and timebound animals was never enough for us. Our human eyes were only built to see 3 and a half of the 10 plus dimensions and only 5% of the matter and energy in the universe. Not knowing but seeking has always been the default state of mortal beings. This is what makes scifi author Philip k dick's idea of "anamnesia" so compelling. Most of us would ove to open the door to recieve a package an suddenly get blasted with a pink laserbeam from space that makes us unforget all of the universe's secrets. But that's not going to happen. You and I were dropped into this reality already in progress. Our stories are the middle sentence of the middle paragraph of the middle chapter of one book on an infinite shelf of an infinite library. We seek the unknowable we chase the impossible. we were born into a species of Quixotes anthropromorphising the windmill motions of the panets above our heads. Pretending that there are gods and giants lying on their sides up in the sky like constellations. Every day of every millennium we are tilting at every impossibility on the futile quest for absolute knowledge. Those who are certain of anything aren't looking at the whole picture. It's like it says on the popular time bureau bumper stickers, "If You're Not Confused, You're Not Paying Attention." I know you want to know all of these answers Agent Tango. Are we the good guys? Is what we're doing here worthwhile? Did our fallen comrades die for the greater good? Who are these robed men spying on use from liminal spaces? There are things you will never know Agent Tango, especially when you're working for the Time Bureau. It's best that you learn to embrace this feelig. Wanting to know more is in your nature, but all we can ever do is persue knowledge while also learning to embrace confusion. Strive to live in what we in the Bureau call a state of "Ecstatic Unknowing" Find new things to baffle you every day, Agent Tango. Once you've learned to love confusion you will find that working for the Time Bureau is the most rewarding job in the universe. We're a sort of Uncertainty Club. We show up where we're told and when we're told and we say to the universe, "I want you to Confuse me as hard as you can." and she does. WHen it comes to shaking you up and robbing you of the illusion of your certainties the universe will come through every single time. But you have to keep at least one foot in the here and now. These robed wraiths that you see in your peripheral vision, I'll tell you. They'reancient Time Agents. They're those who came long before us and tried to understand it all without embracing it as unknowable. They took both feet off of the third dimension that we have a firm grasp on and they got lost in the dimensions beyond. They tried to leave our home dimension and bring the unknownable back with them into the realm of uncertainty. This was the windmill that defeated them. They are lost now. Sometimes they crown around you as you're just falling asleep or just waking up and they try to speak to us from beyond. But they've lost all rational language in their time outside of our dimension. They can only speak to you in strange half-rememered rumblings. mixtapes of seemingly random experiences that they view from the shadows. How did they end up escaping into irrational dimensions? Well. The myths say that they were stuc in ancient Egypt during an era of the Causal War when time travel was impossible due to a um cataclysm. They tried to get home another way without time travel by stepping into another dimension entirely. There are a lot to choose from apparently. We still honor these lost souls in the time bureau. They're very important to us in our symbolism. We call them the League of the Secret KNot and we follow the rituals that they designed out of tradition. Look at your uniform. The codename that you go by in the Bureau taht you have embroidered above your left breast pocket, it features the name of a nautical knot and on your upper arm you'll find their insigia. a black banner which is embroidered with rainbow beams of light bent by a prism and parabolic mirrors so that these beams never hit a simple rope knot that is hidden in a chamber inside. Some of the gibberish taht you went through in your initiation rites when you became a time agent were taken directly from the rituals designed by the Lague of the Secret KNot. All traditions start somewhere. The League of the Secret kNot started many iterations of the multiverse before I became the Timescanner and still we continue to follow the ways of the League of the Secret KNot not to gain the answers to the universe's mysteries but to embrace the beauty of the questinos. i'ts important to appreciate the shape of a question as if it is an abstract piece of sculpture, this sensation is the ultimate bliss. A state we call "wonder." The confusion of stepping outside of what we already know and building new neural pathways to explain that which we do not know. You and I are the universe investigating itself. And we investigate in order to feel wonder. Not to find answers. The lost members of the League of the Secret KNot and I see them as well but I can't communicate with them so I don't know for certain byt II'd like to think that they've embraced this state of ecstatic unknowing themselves, I'd like to think that they never returned to our terrestrial plain because what they've found out there is even greater. They've become one with the very concept of wonder.
Thank you for your letter, Tango. I hope that I've confused you. And if you come across any puzzling mysteries while you're in the field please send them to me and return the favor. I want you to confuse me as hard as you can.

INT. TIME CRYSTAL OMEGA, HEAT DEATH OF THE UNIVERSE
The hum of the Time Crystal buzzes in the background.
TIMESCANNER: Roman Mars, host of the 21st century radio program 99% Invisible once tweeted this: "If you have 100,000 listeners and you edit out one useless minute you are saving 100,000 wasted minutes in the world. You’re practically a hero." Not to toot my own horn, but oftentimes I'll compact a full transmission of The Infinite Now into a single minute. Other times, I'll refrain from making an episode  altogether. Superhero. > But in all seriousness, Time Agents, let's hope the time bound internet broadcasters follow Mr Mars' advice. Because lifespans and attention spans are both quite limited in the 21st century and if you're stationed there, just wading through their slooooow unoptimized methods of communication can be taxing. Each hello or goodbye like watching a lone and cross a sidewalk without a scent to follow. God bless Mr Mars for setting change in motion and getting these ants to move their asses.
But if you are stationed in the 21st century, don’t judge the locals too harshly. They are so young. Written language itself is only 5000 years old for most of them. They are just beginning to grasp the immense power of words. Words are reality atoms. And just like atoms, when used to their full potential, each word has the power within it to knock down mountains. Locals such as this Roman Mars are just beginning to experiment with language efficiency. how to convey ideas with greater and greater complexity with fewer and fewer words. They’re feeling remorse for trading in novels for tweets. When the value of either lies in its world changing power, not in its length. The best authors of their next century will be concept refineries. pumping out high octane idea concentrate with no impurities. 21st century poets will be nanotech linguists capable of compressing Anna Karenina into a limerick. Each phrase a Tiny machine working on each others minds to alter their shared reality from the inside out.
You can help speed up the evolution of their language, Time Agents. Whisper a nano-linguistic mechanism into their ears. A phrase never uttered before. (Coal mine heckler) A sequence of words that will germinate within them like a seed and expand into a Maple Tree. (Cherubic Skeleton) Once your phrase has grown within them they will encode the same phrase into their morning greetings,(non-chemical acid sneakers) their thank yous, (stork terpentine) their daily pleasantries. (Hemlock vapor cartographer) Little turns of phrase flying like helicopter seeds from their lips to grow within the fertile minds of their neighbors.
List strange phrases in your spare time. combinations never uttered before. whisper them to passersby. Leave notes on car windows.(kismet milk, homeliest ricochet line dance, fireman epidemic, choleric isthmus, kite thermos, lithe smoke locker) at first the phrases will appear nonsensical. But they will churn within the listeners' heads and mutate language where it lives. Each unheard phrase replacing a textbook worth of information like crispr editing the communication genome.
In time the locals will begin to compress their language into tighter and tighter data packages. They’ll order their coffee in 7 words instead of 12, They’ll seduce each other over a single syllable and the raising of an eyebrow instead of half a dozen cocktails. This is important work.
We need single phoneme communiques that transmit entire Peace accords so that they can be exchanged quicker than nuclear codes can be typed.
Language is a technology invented to resolve conflict. Pre-language Species are only capable of resolving conflicts with force. Language can supplant violence with cooperation. Cooperation is more efficient than conflict, but people are quicker to turn to conflict.
We must help the local 21st centurions to develop words of peace that are faster than the bullets of war.
Of course language can be used for war as well. So, consider it an arms race. Which will win: More enlightening and precise language or more deceitful and threatening language? language designed to feed fear?
Time agents are everywhere. Counter Time Agents are everywhere. Weapons are pointed at (nearly) every point in spacetime. So what are you going to say and how fast can you say it?
There once was a man beyond time.
who was stuck in a gem for a crime. when he tried to escape.
the universe lost its shape.
So they trapped him instead in this rhyme.

Transcript for 1x19 TIME HUNTERS

The following is an annotated transcript of episode #1684235 of The Infinite Now. Originally broadcast from outside of space-time to Earth, June 30th 2015. Despite the recurring "accidents" that destroyed a majority of the intercepted Infinite Now recordings, this recording still survives. Listen to it here.
CRYSTAL: Incoming transmission from The Timescanner.
(More temporal static than usual)
TIMESCANNER: This broadcast is being sent on different wavelengths than usual. Instead of being tuned to temporal radio frequencies, this message has been encoded into coincidences. Binary 1s and 0s forming an MP3 file encoded in the repeated patterns of traffic accidents, and in unusual weather patterns. The cicadas outside your bedroom window are singing messages to you in morse code.
This message is not being sent to Time Agents, but to a few lucky timebound civilians who are getting close to the Time Bureau’s secrets. You are receiving this message because you have identified the patterns we left for you. I am the Timescanner. I have been watching you from outside of time. You have been following synchronicities in your life like a trail of bread crumbs and they are leading you toward the answers you’ve been seeking. ALeading you toward the true nature of time and reality. Don’t give up now. You are also receiving this transmission because up until this point in time you have lived an inconsequential life
If you received this transmission I regret to inform you that your life has been deemed to so far have no effect on the spacetime continuum. I'm talking on a galactic scale, helping little old ladies cross the street or taking in a stray dog won’t count here. That’s wonderful of you. Great. I'm happy you did that. But it won’t save your life.
That’s right. You are in danger.
An inconsequential life is the most dangerous life possible. With a worse mortality rate than that of most reckless adventurers.
This is because the inconsequential such as yourself are always in grave danger. The inconsequential are hunted for sport by rogue time travelers known as TimeHunters. To any Time Hunter with a lust for blood you are an animal rady to be slaughtered. Target Practice. You are as good as dead already.
Time Hunters can safely kill you right now. Slicing your jugular or poisoning your morning coffee will not result in any temporal paradox or alteration of the primary timeline. Chasing you down a dark alley and severing your limbs with lasers won’t accidentally prevent anybody’s grandmothers from being born. Hunting you down with killer drones the size of mosquitos won’t change who wins World War 3. Because your life as you are currently living it doesn’t move the trajectory of your timeline one single degree.
Here. Remove one earbud. Listen. You can hear them coming for you now. They’re in the hall. [sounds of whispering and footsteps in the hall] Hear them? Now. Shh. Put your earbud back in.
You can’t escape from the Time Hunters like some sort of action movie hero. They’ll outrun you, outfight you. They’re weapons will pierce your skull instantly and they will not miss. The only thing you can do is make yourself consequential. Shh. Ok. Right now. If you make a decision in this very moment to do something with your life and you follow through with it that will put you on the Time Hunters’ No Kill list. But you have to do it right now. They're getting closer.
(Voices in alien languages coming from the other side of the bedroom door.)
Can you feel a change in barometric pressure?, the faint scent of ozone in the air? The Time Hunters’ weapons are sucking electric ions from the air. charging for the kill.
You’ve heard about the butterfly who flapped its wings in Detroit, causing a giant lizard to attack Tokyo? You must become that butterfly. Right now.
Do something, anything, to put more of you into the universe. And the universe will create opportunities for your influence to spread. Put more of your true self into the universe. The universe will be better for it. The timeline you ride will be moved, even if slightly. And because of this you will be spared.
Ok. Have you thought of how you can affect the world yet? Think quickly. Let the sounds of your assassins outside the door motivate you.
Stand up again. visualize it. Visualize what it is you have to do. Visualize what it is that you can do that nobody else can do in the world. And take another step toward it. Always keep one foot in front of the other. Take a vow right now that for the rest of your life you will keep moving, working toward whatever goal it is that you thought of.
Think harder. Clearer. Plan your next action.
That’s it. You’re doing it. With each step toward Your potential, the Time Hunters take a step away from the door.
Hear that creaking of floorboards? They’re backing away from you as your signal on their existentially-lost-o-meter weakens.
Good. Good.
(Heavy steps in your direction.)
Oh no. Was that a doubt? Listen. Shh. The Time Hunters are turning your way again.
Here they come. It occurs to me now that you may find that you are still unable to act even though you want to. Even if you know how you want to change the world. To save your life from the Time Hunters. And if that's true I have especially bad news for you.
You have already been hunted. The Time Hunters have already killed you. You are already dead. Your life when you lived it was inconsequential and your body is now a corpse hidden by Time Hunters somewhere in a distant time. Somewhere it will never be found. Your body has been replaced by a will-less biological android whose physiology is identical to your original self. And the you you think that you are is an automaton going through your old day to day motions. It's just a placeholder mimicking life and waiting to play out a common boring old death so that nobody you’ve ever known will know that little old you ever did anything as interesting as being killed by Time Hunters. What’s that? You don't want to be a placeholder automaton? Well, I guess since Placeholders are identical to the real thing, and since time can be changed back to front just as easily as front to back, I guess that you could probably decide to be in a timeline where you are still alive.
The only way to tell the difference between a human and a will-less decoy is that living humans have the will to act. So I guess it's not necessarily too late if you do something of value that will affect your timeline. So choose to make yourself real again. Cut the strings Pinnochio and step toward Your Future. There's not much I can do here. It's all up to you. Choose what you are. Choose to be alive. Choose to have n effect on the world around you.
The truth is that there are infinite timelines and in some you are inconsequential and you were killed and replaced by this placeholder body incapable of free will. In other timelines you were consequential and contributed to society and lived long enough to meet your first Time Bureau Agent, perhaps if you find yourself in one of those timelines you could even live to even attend the Time Bureau Academy. At this point in time you probably can’t tell which of those timelines you are in. The only way is to DECIDE which timeline you are in. By acting. By living as more than an automaton. By putting more of what is uniquely you into the world, and by investigating more of the patterns and coincidences that will lead you to be contacted by the Time Bureau for further instructions...and possibly...may lead you to recruitment.
Follow my advice and you will live hear from me again soon.
Good luck potential Time Agent.
Be consequential.
Timescanner out.
