ECSTATIC UNKNOWING

Timescanner avoids answering a mailbag question by expounding the argument that knowing is overrated. In the process he tells us about the League of the Secret Knot, an ancient secret society created by early Time Agents.

TRANSCRIPT FOR ECSTATIC UNKNOWING

CRYSTAL: Incoming transmission from the Timescanner. Entertaining fellow time agents stationed in the field. WOrking in secret to maintain the integrity of the spacetime continuum. Broadcasting to you from time crystal omega at the heat death of the universe. Here's your host the Timescanner and this is The Infinite Now.

TIMESCANNER:
Oh hello there. Ooh. spacetime carrier pigeon. That means that it's time for another Infinite Now Mailbag. Ok. This letter says, "Dear Timescanner. What is the ultimate goal of the Causal War. War we on the right side? Did I do the right thing by joining the Time Bureau? I miss my family. Who are the men in robes I keep seeing in my peripheral vision? The disappear when I look directly at them. The first robed man appeared in the spaces where I can just quite ot see him on the day I enlisted in the Time Bureau and they've been multiplying ever since. The robed men are everywhere now. Everywhere except where I'm looking. They're even just outside of my dreams watching. Sincerely. Agent Redbreast Bowling Tango.
Dear Tango, I'm not going to answer that directly. Some answers can only be understood via detours. In the same way that you aren't able to perceive the men who aren't really there when you are looking directly at them. So let me start somewhere else entirely. Depending on who you ask there are between 10 and 26 dimensions to our universe. The human condition is a result of being able to conceive of higher dimensions but not being able to experience them directly. we're always striving for those parts of the universe that we can't quite reach. yet. Parts of our universe that we can just barely percieve. Our existence as physical eathbound and timebound animals was never enough for us. Our human eyes were only built to see 3 and a half of the 10 plus dimensions and only 5% of the matter and energy in the universe. Not knowing but seeking has always been the default state of mortal beings. This is what makes scifi author Philip k dick's idea of "anamnesia" so compelling. Most of us would ove to open the door to recieve a package an suddenly get blasted with a pink laserbeam from space that makes us unforget all of the universe's secrets. But that's not going to happen. You and I were dropped into this reality already in progress. Our stories are the middle sentence of the middle paragraph of the middle chapter of one book on an infinite shelf of an infinite library. We seek the unknowable we chase the impossible. we were born into a species of Quixotes anthropromorphising the windmill motions of the panets above our heads. Pretending that there are gods and giants lying on their sides up in the sky like constellations. Every day of every millennium we are tilting at every impossibility on the futile quest for absolute knowledge. Those who are certain of anything aren't looking at the whole picture. It's like it says on the popular time bureau bumper stickers, "If You're Not Confused, You're Not Paying Attention." I know you want to know all of these answers Agent Tango. Are we the good guys? Is what we're doing here worthwhile? Did our fallen comrades die for the greater good? Who are these robed men spying on use from liminal spaces? There are things you will never know Agent Tango, especially when you're working for the Time Bureau. It's best that you learn to embrace this feelig. Wanting to know more is in your nature, but all we can ever do is persue knowledge while also learning to embrace confusion. Strive to live in what we in the Bureau call a state of "Ecstatic Unknowing" Find new things to baffle you every day, Agent Tango. Once you've learned to love confusion you will find that working for the Time Bureau is the most rewarding job in the universe. We're a sort of Uncertainty Club. We show up where we're told and when we're told and we say to the universe, "I want you to Confuse me as hard as you can." and she does. WHen it comes to shaking you up and robbing you of the illusion of your certainties the universe will come through every single time. But you have to keep at least one foot in the here and now. These robed wraiths that you see in your peripheral vision, I'll tell you. They'reancient Time Agents. They're those who came long before us and tried to understand it all without embracing it as unknowable. They took both feet off of the third dimension that we have a firm grasp on and they got lost in the dimensions beyond. They tried to leave our home dimension and bring the unknownable back with them into the realm of uncertainty. This was the windmill that defeated them. They are lost now. Sometimes they crown around you as you're just falling asleep or just waking up and they try to speak to us from beyond. But they've lost all rational language in their time outside of our dimension. They can only speak to you in strange half-rememered rumblings. mixtapes of seemingly random experiences that they view from the shadows. How did they end up escaping into irrational dimensions? Well. The myths say that they were stuc in ancient Egypt during an era of the Causal War when time travel was impossible due to a um cataclysm. They tried to get home another way without time travel by stepping into another dimension entirely. There are a lot to choose from apparently. We still honor these lost souls in the time bureau. They're very important to us in our symbolism. We call them the League of the Secret KNot and we follow the rituals that they designed out of tradition. Look at your uniform. The codename that you go by in the Bureau taht you have embroidered above your left breast pocket, it features the name of a nautical knot and on your upper arm you'll find their insigia. a black banner which is embroidered with rainbow beams of light bent by a prism and parabolic mirrors so that these beams never hit a simple rope knot that is hidden in a chamber inside. Some of the gibberish taht you went through in your initiation rites when you became a time agent were taken directly from the rituals designed by the Lague of the Secret KNot. All traditions start somewhere. The League of the Secret kNot started many iterations of the multiverse before I became the Timescanner and still we continue to follow the ways of the League of the Secret KNot not to gain the answers to the universe's mysteries but to embrace the beauty of the questinos. i'ts important to appreciate the shape of a question as if it is an abstract piece of sculpture, this sensation is the ultimate bliss. A state we call "wonder." The confusion of stepping outside of what we already know and building new neural pathways to explain that which we do not know. You and I are the universe investigating itself. And we investigate in order to feel wonder. Not to find answers. The lost members of the League of the Secret KNot and I see them as well but I can't communicate with them so I don't know for certain byt II'd like to think that they've embraced this state of ecstatic unknowing themselves, I'd like to think that they never returned to our terrestrial plain because what they've found out there is even greater. They've become one with the very concept of wonder.
Thank you for your letter, Tango. I hope that I've confused you. And if you come across any puzzling mysteries while you're in the field please send them to me and return the favor. I want you to confuse me as hard as you can.
