I want to have an open mind here. I have ideas, but no firm vision.
Influences: The Beastie Boys Book, Cloud Atlas, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Things to learn from Star Wars: sound effects, audio universe, mythic quality, keep it simple, Musical Themes, Instantly recognizeable sillhouettes can still apply to audio fiction in description and in vocal qualities of the actors.
I'd like to write it like it's a novel of scripts if that makes sense. A complete story front to back that I can record and edit and parse out. Pad out and do spontaneous episodes as well if I feel the need.
Premise:
A guy called the Timescanner used to be a Time Agent and now he's stuck in a Time Crystal at the Heat Death of the Universe doing a raidon broadcast to Time Agents in the Field. A sort of This Non-Linear Life.
I could do other broadcasts as well to broaden who is telling the story, but that might overcomplicate things. It does go along with my novel concept better to do that though. And if it was all written before producing it that would help.
What is at stake?
Timescanner getting out of the Crystal, the mystery of why he's there in the first place, possibly the living organism of time itself is also in danger and Timescanner is the key to that.
Idea 1: Timescanner hatches plan to escape from Cyrstal, which endangers the Omniverse. Possibly rendering Time Travel impossible. Good Forces look for him to put him back in, bad forces look for him to replace him. he has his own plan.
Idea 2: TS becomes simply the Narrator, the Journalist of the Whills who is telling someone else's story. Possibly the story of his replacement? enabling him to leave the Crystal at the end? This could be sorta like VALIS if done right. He's the narrator. He's telling the story of Sophia as raised by Richard. We don't know that Richard is his alternate timeline self until the end. Interspersed with this story we would tell backstory on the League, The Counter-Time Forces, How TS got into the Crystal and the incident that happened when he escaped that made time travel impossible.
If I were to have this all written I could pad it out with tangents as needed and that would rock. Ideally I would write and edit it all including doing all the voices myself and sound editing and then have voice actors record huge swaths of the run all at once once I knew exactly what was needed of them. Ask them to not spoil anything and call them back once a year to do more episodes I wrote to fill in other bits.
___
How would I tell that story? What's a good way to structure it? It's not that different from plans I had 4 years ago. I just need to plan it all out really well and write it all so I'm not flying by the seat of my pants. I could conceivably have the bulk of 6 years of work or more done and could focus on the business side of things and not feel stress at finishing the work and delivering it.
what can i do today? I can find all the pieces and the seeds and put them into this blog to be written and re-written and put into an outline.
so about that stucture:

Freewrite: language is the source of disorientation. Even famous and supposedly smart filmmaker Christopher Nolan recently expressed his confusion over mirrors. Why do they "flip" images left to right and not flip the up and down? I was an adult before the onvious answer came to me as well so no shame being thrown. But the answer is that it doesn't flip anything at all. It represents a 1:1 correlation of the image reflected. shapes to your right are reflected on your right and left on your left and top to top and down to down. This is all perfectly intuitive and the only thing that makes it confusing is the language on your t-shirt is difficult to read. Language is so intricately linked to our sense of reality that when NIKE becomes EKIN we assume the reality we see has been flipped left to right right to left. It's a problem only that

How Time Travel Works in TIN
Summon or position yourself where a time crystal will appear.
As a time crystal approaches, coincidences will occur with increasing frequency and the audio of background noises will align into a specific musical phrase. A time crystal isn't really made out of matter so much as it is made out of a 4 dimensional lattice of unlikely ordered phenomena. Repeated numbers, the sounds of nature forming a repeating musical phrase, unlikely coincidences, uncanny accidents.
A combination of arranging your surroundings, using advanced technology, and reciting a mantra/litany can create a time crystal around you.
This is why Nora's house was filled with strange sybols and colors.

TIN Space-Time Opera audio drama / audio design for TIN
This could be a spin-off. The more philosophical and stream of consciousness stories broadcast from TS and then a related but tonally different version as told here.
Basic ideas: bouncing back and forth from alternate timeline Timescanner living a mundane life at home and a world-trotting adventure.
Taking a step back. I'm not sure if this is what I want or not. If I do an epic is it based on this or something else?
If it's done in audio, the things that make it epic are different that Star Wars. no visuals to go off of except imagery you imply. So the similarities would be in thematic music and cool sound effects. I'm not sure my skills in either are up to snuff right now. But I could assemble a team if I wrote the right scripts.
Alexander on sound design and editing, Matthew Schoendorf on composing music, Jeffrey Gardner on sound effects?
I don't know. I can't say my vision is clear enough to move forward with this.
Can you think of something as cool as a Lightsaber?
A synesthetic weapon? Confuse two senses. Audio would obviously be ideal for a podcast.
A soundwave gun.
A tone that makes people smell ozone and then they pass out.
A taste on their tongue that occurs before people travel through time involuntarily. A powerful metallic citrus taste that starts on the tongue and spreads to the whole body tasting something acrid and sour with every cell of your body.
A coin placed in the mouth before you can murder a time traveler so their body is disposed of properly without affecting the timeline.
A musical phrase heard before a Time Crystal appears. Your ears have to be trained to hear it, as it's usually just interpreted as background noises. Birds, wind, tires in gravel, etc pitch into recognizeable tones when a time crystal approaches.

Brainstorming- is there a way I can make myself an independent sotrytelling emperor like George Lucas? Make a narrative path from where I'm at to there.
#1 conceive of awesome worlds and make kick ass versions of them in audiodrama form.
-expand to visual and literary mediums as well, comics and novels. It is possible to own all those processes myself through indie publishing.
-hold onto rights for the things I create myself and continue developing a rabid fanbase for them.
-take writing, producing, directing gigs on other properties I don't own and hope they are hits
-write script, do/commission concept art for whole movie, do motion-storyboard, audio, sfx, full length audiocomic version of movie as a proof of concept. Use that to get financing to do the movie independently myself and get distribution deal for my movie, start my own production company. This will only be profitable if I have a toyetic movie with lots of merchandising potential, and I hold onto all of those rights myself.
Basically, I need to make concept art based on what is the coolest shit you could ever see that will basically sell itself.
That should be my weekend project. Make cool ass concept art for a world that will sell merch,
the gameplan would be to develop as much of this as I can over the next 4 years and when Isaac moves out go whole hog on all of it with a bunch of it already developed.

Have a bunch of pilot episodes ready to go. Develop a show and record it and have a show bible written and have them ready to sell to networks. Hire writers I trust (jeff and alexander)
I don't think it was the finale people were pissed at with LOST. It's that the writers were being intentionally misleading for the entire final season and that was the episode they revealed that they'd been yanking our chains for 19 episodes. That doesn't feel good. It's tough to pay off duplicitousness like that in storytelling.
Lost was a bootcamp for showrunning and one of the best things to come out of it was lindelof's subsequent shows The Leftovers and Watchmen. The Leftovers especially, uses many of the same themes as Lost, but uses them in more mature, less pulpy ways.
Lost rocks as long as you don't take it too seriously. It's a weird, pulpy as hell genre show. The problem with mass audiences was that the genre-ness crept up on them. Starting off as a drama. A scripted Survivor, and the weird elements got more and more prominent until it was full on Steven King territory.
Edit Lost Chronologically.

classes in film direction, project management, and leadership and business would be useful as an artist. You have to be able to manage large organizational tasks and resources and personnel to create ambitious works of art.
I'll look at film forum now.
Turns out being constantly connected to an instant global validation/outrage machine isn't the way to make good art.
I like the idea of calling rough drafts "vomit drafts" get it out and then restructure and reshape and then you can call it a rough draft. A rough draft is something someone else you're close to can read and a vomit draft is for my eyes only.
Humor is important for experimental media. Even if it's a really offbeat humor sparsely used. You need a reason to enjoy and return to an experimental work or you won't put in the work to warm up to it. Based on the strength of Upstream Color, I'd say Shane Carruth could be this generation's David Lynch except that his movies are relentlessly humorless. Rich Kelly's Donnie Darko was successful because the humor worked, his subsequent movies Southland Tales, the humor did not work at all and The Box was devoid of humor.
This is similar to how comedy is important to expanding consciousness and calling out injustices. You need to get over the discomfort of new ideas and humor is the only way i know of to diffuse that without pain and recovery or exposure therapy.
Humor is important to growth. Enlightenment would be a riot. There's a reason the buddha is always depicted laughing.
Exposure therapy or comedy, those are the two mechanisms of personal growth.
When confronted with something truly new there are only two natural reactions: revulsion or laughter. A little bit of humor can at least give you a mixture of both.
escapist humor is not good. Confronting humor often is. Escapist humor reinforces the status quo and is often punching down or is insult comedy. Think a lot of sitcom humor. finding humor in taboos, drawing lines of acceptible behavior instead of breaking them down. wall-building humor. vs boundary dissolving humor.

Random Star Wars Thoughts
Mortis is the LOST Island of the Star Wars Galaxy. You could make a weird fiction show about a spaceship of people who are brought to Mortis and it would play out a lot like LOST.
_______
Luke was told in ESB that if he goes to save Han and Leia it will destroy all that they fight for. Han and Leia have a chld named Ben who goes bad and destroys the New Republic and Luke's new Jedi Academy. If he would have stayed to train with Yoda perhaps Han and Leia would have died, but their new government wouldn't have been destroyed.
______
I think the midichlorian thing is misunderstood and blown out of proportion. The force doesn't come from the midichlorians, it allows the Force to use us and communicate with us. The Force is a mystical energy source. Let's say it works on a quantum level. Bacteria exist closet to that scale and they are more directly tied to The Force as a result. In an age when the galaxy didn't have multi-celular life, bacteria controlled by the Force wills itself to self-organize into larger scale organisms that are capable of having a larger impact on the galaxy.
Extrapolating this to our own galaxy, I'm curious about the veracity of this idea. Our bacteria in our gut affects our mental state more than previously thought. Use of psychedelic fungus allows us to merge with the "cosmic force" and through meditation a la the Jedi we are able to connect with this same energy field.
Many artist and writers develop their work to the point where they merge with their life philosophies and they become almost like channeled religious tests. The Force as it is explained in the original trilogy is evocative of buddhism, but vague and doesn't really add any new dimensions. The idea of midichlorians /mitochondria being part of the mechanism for life/spiritual energy is a new idea. One that George Lucas has obviously spent a lot of time thinking about.
As referenced in Yoda's vision quest arc in season 6 of the Clone Wars, and Qui Gon's innovations in maintaining his identity after death, and in George's interviews with James Cameron in which he discusses plans for his sequel trilogy to focus on the "microbiotic world"
This would no doubt be reviled by the fanbase, but I for one am interested in where he would go with these ideas and how he planned to make these ideas cinematic. I suspect these ideas would tie in with prophecies and the Whills and Anakin's conception.
George was full of ideas and his plans for the overall saga changed constantly. There are reports via Mark Hamill that at one point he was going to make a trilogy of "ethereal" films more akin to the final segment of 2001.
George did get to dive into some more mythological and psychedelic/mystical material in the Clone Wars in the Mortis arc and Yoda's visionquest arc. I suspect these are from the same notebook of ideas.
references: Force Material episode on The Whills, JD Rinzler books, Gary Kurtz book, etc.
Some thoughts inspired by this: the role of bacteria and fungus in the spiritual process and experience. If our mitochondria are involved in the spirit realm, what happens when we are buried and plants and fungus feed on that material and energy? Do we return to the cosmic force or the living force through that process?

Illuminati Handbook
Those in power craft culture and government and policies in order to make them susceptible to control by the will of others and against developing their own will. Like training a pack of dogs. This is evident in the world around us. There's no way kings weren't impressed with their dog trainers and take some tips from them. And there's no way these things aren't written down somewhere where the rich and powerful can access it but it's somewhat less accessible to the masses who might take the dog comparison to be unfavorable.
These texts were hand-written back in the old days, but the ruling class of the 21st century is somewhat less interested in reading these days than in satisfying their every desire. And so training videos were filmed instead.
What you're about to listen to is audio from those video tapes. Our men were able to smuggle a set of VHS tapes out. They were intended to be destroyed when the newer DVDs were sent out. So some of their plans may have changed since the mid 1980s, but I think what we found will be enough to chew on for some time. Let's begin with Volume 1 tape 1: Overview and Initiation.
(Do cool audio and music and VHS tape warble. Give it an early 80s Epcot Center vibe. Evil Epcot is the aesthetic.)
Religion. This is a really touchy subject. God/Satan, The Spirit Realm. The may or may not exist. We're sure you have your own opinion and proof one way or the other that we may present you with would persuade you one way or the other. What we can tell you is that ritual works. The mechanics of that you can fill in with whatever theory you prefer. Divine power, magic, psychology, some mumbo jumbo made out of misunderstanding quantum theory. Pick one. But know that ritual works. Rituals can empower the individual, or can open one up to be controlled by others. Your average Sunday Church contains rituals designed to encourage people to give up their will to others. God ostensibly. But we leave the crack open for any person in a position of power and authority to also take the reigns. Rituals designed to strengthen the individual will, on the otherhand are discouraged for the masses and made available to you much later in these video series.
In old times practiioners were murdered for being witches or heretics. these days, much like many of our current policies, it is merely necessary to maintain a majority with week wills and who follow our suggestions unquestioningly. Humans are a social species and if you get 50% of a population to follow unquestioningly, they will define acceptible behavior patterns that another 40 percent will follow out of convenience even if they question. a 10% minority living outside of our control is acceptable and unthreatening to our plans. And these populations are easily jailed. Just make key traits of theirs illegal and lock away any poor people who do those things.
That won't stop you of course. We have each others backs, we don't prosecute each other, and we can afford not only the best lawyers, we can also afford the best judges and juries if you catch our meaning.

Hypnagogic song- One of the shongs from Smashing Pumpkins' newest album shiny and oh so bright. I think it may have been Silvery Sometimes (Ghosts). Reminds me of when I wanted to die my hair silver and name myself Dream as a teen in the mid 90s. There was an interesting time when goth and psychedelia and alternative culture mixed and that was a good place for my soul. That may be the cultural moment I came from/belong, and it seems mostly forgotten by culture except maybe in association with the pumpkins. Do it again, but in other media and without Billy Corgan's self-obsessed sociopathy. My ideal aesthetic is similar to this, the seed of my first novel Arriving Sea came from listening to Mellon Collie and dreaming imagery up to it. THe electricity that I sometimes feel that is my soul, it feels like the buzz of sp's guitars, the drive of its drums and the strange cry of billy's voice combined. I need to forget who Billy became and listen to the underlying spirit of his music. I'm going to make a playlist of sp formula songs.

Dream.Driving my son to the suburbs to go swimming. We're driving an old truck my dad left us. The breaks don't work and it drifts really badly. It's dangerous to drive, but it's all I have and all I can afford. This seems like it's about genetic inheritance and being stuck in a clas system that works against us. The best thing to do would be to get rid of the faulty truck and work to get a safer vehicle. Ditch the things that make you destined to fail even if it takes extra work and money to take a different road. Namely, bad habits, no career, a fatalistic attitude toward money.

context, george floyd protests and riots in 28 cities, woke up in the morning to thunder and lightning and rainstorms. Dreamed my apartment was the second story o a house with secret rooms including a roof that can be lifted like a convertable on sunny days. a rectangular enclosed porch and a center large living space divided in half by a wall and a roof that lifts upward at the center like wooden blinds or maybe like a picnic basket. I had a painting studio there and i wondered why i so seldom raise the roof on my own home. why do i cower from enjoyment in the one place i should feel comfortable to be myself?
no song upon waking but i did feel compelled to listen to Michael Andrews' Donnie Darko and You Me and everyone we know scores.

context, george floyd protests and riots in 28 cities, woke up in the morning to thunder and lightning and rainstorms.

Other Podcast Ideas (undeveloped)
Rejected Shorts: Other podcasts: An experimental Selected Shorts. Actors reading experimental fiction in front of an audience that likes that sort of thing. brainstorm.
Symphonic Devices: Remix a song into an extended symphony accompanying a fan's associated memories of the song, and looping and expanding elements from the stems.
Please Hold: A Phone Tree audio drama. A new path and a new piece of info to unlock new segments of the real phone tree (password, extension, etc) with each new episode.
But Wait There's More: Two audio dramas in one. A sitcom about a infomercial inventor and a CIA agent working together, and a behind the scenes and episode review podcast about the crazy story about the cult who made the podcast. brainstorm,
tools:
how to write a pilot.

Favorite sitcoms: The Good Place, Futurama, Parks and Rec, Community. Strong character based humor and interpersonal relationship humor.

A sitcom and fictional sitcom review show combo would be a fun experiment. Release the two episodes on the same feed each release day. This would help the recommendation algorythms too.
[3:42 PM]
Dan and I worked out one possible premise:

TIMESCANNER05/01/2020
A sitcom produced and acted by a cult. So we'd do the sitcom and then do clips of other shows they're in and behind the scenes stories and anectdotes and interviews.
[3:54 PM]
We didn't come up with a premise for the actual sitcom though.
[3:54 PM]
Personally I like workplace sitcoms best.
[3:54 PM]
WORKPLACE SITCOM
[3:55 PM]
what personality types haven't really been represented much in sitcoms? and personality types from 20 years ago so we can do later seasons as "reunion seasons"
[3:58 PM]
It would be fun to go into sitcom workflows and formulas and work from those and explain those in the recap show.
[3:59 PM]
ORIGINAL SHOW IN 1990s
[3:59 PM]
LOOSELY INSPIRED BY TWIN PEAKS, BUT A SITCOM
[3:59 PM]
CULT LOOSELY INSPIRED BY FRANCIS COPOLA'S ZOETROPE FILMS COMPANY
[4:04 PM]
what kind of strange loops can we get the two shows into? What kind of workplace would the cult find humor in?
[4:05 PM]
A fair question would be "is this too high a concept?" "would it hurt the quality of the actual sitcom to do this?"
[4:06 PM]
Could we do a full season of the sitcom and then release a full season of the behind the scenes/recap show? Like leave it a surprise. "But wait there's more."
[4:06 PM]
BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE is a good title for a sitcom.
[4:07 PM]
infomercial inventor and his crew? Like a fictional Sham Wow/Ron Popeil.
[4:08 PM]
The cult would find it funny to riff on capitalism and marketing and how marketing uses mind control science.
[4:09 PM]
An ex-MK Ultra CIA agent and a sham inventor go into business making infomercial crap. We can make the weirdest possible inventions because we never need to see them, just hear about them.
[4:09 PM]
CHARACTERS:
[4:09 PM]
SCAM IMVENTOR
[4:09 PM]
EX-CIA MIND CONTROL AGENT
[4:10 PM]
HIS CO-HOST
[4:11 PM]
Community and found family are the themes I enjoy most in sitcoms and these would resonate with cultists as well, while having the dark side of being controlled by the leader.
[4:15 PM]
Would there be a laugh track? if it's a 90s show there would be but we'll have to do a test and see how that comes across.
[4:16 PM]
It should be as packed with jokes as Parks and Rec or The Simpsons
[4:16 PM]
22 minute episodes
[4:16 PM]
with fake advertisements?
[4:16 PM]
from the 90s?
[4:17 PM]
That could be backdoor pilots?
[4:17 PM]
An alternate dimension "Must See TV Thursday" lineup from a really fucked up alternate dimension Hollywood.
[4:20 PM]
Potential characters: Ron Popeil, ex-CIA business partner, TV producer, the onscreen co-host, the announcer, audience plants, camerapeople, factory representatives and managers and lineworkers. FIlmed in the factory?
[4:21 PM]
Personality types. look at DnD alignments and do one of each. You could do the anagram thing too. And tarot cards that represent them.

TIMESCANNER05/01/2020
ex-CIA= lawful evil, Ron Popeil=Chaotic good. They are the two leads and opposites on the alignment chart. Ron is definitely based on my character traits. severly ADHD, inventive, hates conflict in a way that gets him into trouble. Probably has PTSD from past experiences. Really wants to make things that work and will change the world. but his business partner wants to control the world including Ron Popeil.
[4:31 PM]
The pilot would have Ron's business as a comic failure. About to go bankrupt and everyone at factory and show about to be unemplyed. When they are approached by the CIA operative who offers to keep them afloat and make them profitable, but it's clear he will change the comany's morals and has alterior motives for their cultural and media potential. ex-CIA also has classified files of forbidden technology. Patents stolen from inventors and marked as "threats to national security."
[4:32 PM]
who would I cast for this show? Think first of tv and film actors to model them after. Then think of audio drama actors I would cast.
[4:37 PM]
ex-CIA=Nick Offerman, AGENT ALBERT TRUCKMAN
[4:40 PM]
inventor=Jeff Bridges, guy from Lodge 49, RON DONNIKER
[4:43 PM]
Donniker seems to be related to circus lingo and means thunder and lightning. A name that goes along with the idea of dazzling showmanship in the service of an entertaining grift.
[4:45 PM]
DON CO ENTERPRISES

TIMESCANNER05/01/2020
Special Agent Albert Truckman would be based on the MK Ultra scientist who once killed an elephant with too much LSD and also declared Jack Ruby insane after meeting him once and making him go insane and also has links to Charles Manson.
[4:53 PM]
Vaughn Donniker is also a good name VonCo
[4:55 PM]
humanism vs control would be the main theme of the show.

TIMESCANNER05/02/2020
SUPER MINOR ROLES (BARISTA, GAS STATION ATTENDANT) WOULD HAVE SERIES LONG ARCS
[11:19 AM]
[11:19 AM]
The 2 part hourlong series would be a “sitcomockumentary.” After 3 seasons as an audio drama I would pitch it to FX and other networks willing to gamble on an experimental show. Half Parks N Rec Part What We Do In The Shadows.
BWTM-an unimpressive inventor teams up with a shady CIA agent to take the Infomercial Business by storm.
MOBWTM-A cast member and a superfan investigate the bizarre story of how this show was created by an ex-art film auteur to fund his cult after his family wealth was used up, and also how the show disappeared from cultural significance and from the internet.
Cast: Vaughn Donniker- Ian from star tripper

BUT WAIT THERE’S MORE
PILOT EPISODE
Welcome to the More on But Wait There’s More Podcast. In fitting with the cancelled cult classic tv show that is the subject of this show, the format for this show will be a little unorthodox. Each week we will post 2 episodes on the same day, The audio from an episode of But Wait There’s More, because it was never released on home video and all records of the show after cancellation seem to have been wiped from the internet, and we will also post a re-watch and investigation episode. Along the way we will go into the insane backstory of how this show came to be and also investigate how it is that such a pop culture phenomenon could have never been released on home video or streaming and how something like that can actually have been scrubbed from the internet. Here now is the pilot episode of But Wait There’s More in the form it originally aired on September 21st 1991.

Yes. We’ll have clips from the different versions, tales about how the show came to be, and new and archival interviews with the surviving cast and crew of the show.

A sizzle reel would use imagery and voice over to explain and set up the pilot of the show, often with past work or examples you shot yourself in order to show them you are the man for the job.
[12:35 PM]
For TIN I would take audio content I produced and add footage in the style I am aiming for to sell it. The thing I watched said web series were a foot in the door, but fiction podcasts should be as well. At least for selling your idea to others. If you want to do it all yourself you'd have to get to where they'd trust you to do that.
[12:39 PM]
If I spend a weekend dreaming about an idea, a good stopping place would be to complete a pitch and a show bible.
